Francis Lai

A Man and a Woman and Love Story: the accordionist from Nice who won the Oscar and the Golden Globe.

An accordionist, he was part of the Montmartre music scene and from 1960 to 1963 accompanied Édith Piaf, writing songs for her such as L'Homme de Berlin. Meeting Claude Lelouch brought him into film: the theme of A Man and a Woman (1966) went round the world, and Lelouch kept working with him for decades. In 1970 he wrote Love Story, which won him the Oscar and the Golden Globe, and whose theme became the song Where Do I Begin?.

Style
Simple romantic melodies, accordion, piano and scat vocals.
Awards
Oscar and Golden Globe for Love Story (1970).
